about

Initial idea was for this to be a country EP. I imagine a lot of the lyrics on here as part of a story based around this guy I dreamt about. He played what was the inspiration for Desert Girl Diner at an open mic that seemed like it was somewhere in the midwest. He kept saying, "She's my desert, desert girl" I thought "desert, desert, girl" was a pretty stupid line so I scratched that part, but instead I decided that that open mic was at the Desert Girl Diner. Some of these songs are written more from my perspective than others but I really enjoy the idea of it being packaged as part of his storyline. I initially wrote quite a bit more lyrics for Desert Girl Diner that ended up being about this girl he was infatuated with. This girl, "Sarah from Sisters" convinced him to come do seasonal work at this diner, only to then let him know she was leaving immediately upon arrival. I spent some time in Sisters, Oregon at a work camp when I was 17 and got really into imagining what life would be like to live there, mostly because it comes off as this sort of contrived wild west theme town. But 17 y/o me felt like there was a mystery and energy about that place. I kept thinking about the hypothetical lives of these high school kids who lived there based on small snippets of shows like Friday Night Lights. For Desert Girl, I imagined that Sarah from Sisters and one of her friends got taken to a beauty pageant in Las Vegas with both of their moms when they were younger and then escaped at the pageant, sold their expensive dresses, and eventually scraped together enough money to buy a car. Then they both left their families for good and road tripped around the U.S. making enough to get by here and there. Open mic guy from dream probably meets them somewhere along this journey and then briefly reunites with her at this diner before she leaves again. Hope that adds color to the songs. I see this as a step towards something better, but I’m still proud of it. Much love if you listen.
